This week
we introduced the calendar. Learning the days of the week, months of the year
and counting rote is part of our daily routine. “Old Miss Sadie, she was a lady
who had a cow, who taught her how to say each day of the week, Sunday, Monday,
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday;” in English, Spanish and French.
The children enjoy this activity and some will make their own calendar.
Please do
not send items for your child to share with the class. As the year progresses, a
box will go home with your child with suggestions of what is appropriate to
share. At the beginning of the year we are busy with new lessons and learning
the rules during our line time. Thank you for helping us with this.
Thank
you, Antonin, Sammy and Tristan for our variety of healthy snacks.
Adieu to
our beloved French Denise. We wish you the best on your move to your new
home. Welcome to Miss Nikole as she joins the Preschool/Kindergarten
staff. | |

We
enjoyed a full week of work.
On
Tuesday we watched a DVD on the U.S. and Johnny
Appleseed. For science on Wednesday we examined our
fingerprints and learned how each individuals prints are
uniquely their own.
On
Wednesday we also implemented a ‘study buddy’ program,
in which the students from the Middle and Upper
Elementary classes team up with our students to share a
half hour of study together. This will occur every
Wednesday morning before lunch. Thursday’s recipe was
strawberry shortcake. Friday we watched a
DVD on plants and animal interdependency for our botany unit.
We want to wish Nicholas a very happy 8th
birthday. |

Another
busy week has passed, and the students in our class are
demonstrating how much they enjoy learning and school.
We certainly enjoy working with each and every student.
This
week students had a lesson on graphing that involved
sorting, tallying and graphing a bagful of M&M’s. Of
course, everyone enjoyed eating them afterward.
Mathscore.com is also an activity that everyone seems to
enjoy. For homework next week, students will be sorting
and classifying a bag of objects and then making a
graph.
We
enjoyed watching a video about the tall tale of “John
Henry” this week. Next week, we will work on the packet
of information about that tall tale and begin to prepare
for writing individual tall tales.
We are
finishing our unit on solid, liquid and gas. Thursday,
we did a group experiment called “Polar Bear Pie,” where
we watched how long it took to change a solid (Eskimo
pie) into a liquid. Each child got his or her own pie
and estimated how many bites it would take to eat the
pie!
The
first book report is due in September. Students need to
turn in the book report anytime before September 30.
Please refer to the parent packet for ideas and the book
report rubric. |

Hi
again, everyone! I hope everyone had a good Labor
Day weekend!
This week since we started on Tuesday our schedule
has been a little off. On Tuesday we had a nice day
and planned out the rest of our week. This Wednesday
we went to the Shelly Deli and everyone got a little
something. We would like to remind you that from now
on children must bring their own money if they
intend to get something at the Shelly. For the past
two weeks if one of the Middle Schoolers forgot
money Ms. Summer paid for a little something for
them.
This week we have started our role model projects
that many people might have to do at home. We would
also like for them to check their planner every
night because sometimes they have homework they
forget about. All of their role model projects are
due September 19. The due date is very near so we
would like everyone to at least be started reading
their book and doing their power point.
We
have started weeding the garden but need another day
of weeding.
We are working on something to teach our class for
extra teaching experience in science. Don’t forget
to do your science experiment!

Pre-K & Kindergarten: Matching flashcards were used
to introduce new words this week. Songs, rounds,
recitations, and games were part of our daily menu.
Children thoroughly enjoyed all the activities
presented during the Spanish Lessons.
Lower Elementary: We keep practicing our Spanish
sounds as well as writing short sentences and
reading beginning and intermediate sounds. We also
reviewed parts of the body and played a game related
to this vocabulary.
Upper Elementary: Our vocabulary for this week was
divided into four categories: Garden, Sky,
Transportation, and Beach. We used objects (plastic
and wooden) to reinforce these lessons.
Middle School: Our goal this week was creative
writing. We used questions/answers as topics.
Students enjoyed this assignment which was carried
out in written and oral form. One of the sentences
was fully illustrated by the students.
Trivia Fact: Spain produces the most olives and
olive oils in the world. |
Community Day
For
music this week we practiced rhythm on the
instruments and rhythm sticks. We also sang songs
about our American government. We are glad that Ms.
Ann is back but Ms. Nikole was a great music
teacher, too!
This week Ms. Jeanine and Ms. Catherine showed us
two films. One of those films was Bill Nye the
Science Guy reporting on plants. The other film is
on the interdependence of animals and plants. Thanks
for the great lesson!
This week Ms. Summer was out of town so Ms. April
taught us. With Ms. April we cut food out of
magazines, hid them around the playground, then
found them and put them in the correct food groups.
Thanks for the fun lesson Ms. April!
We
would like to remind you (again) that if you have
any questions about community day to ask you child’s
teacher so she can answer them.
PTA
The first PTA meeting of the year
is being held on Tuesday, September 9th at 7 pm.
The BPS PTA is long on action and short on holding
meetings. We encourage you to attend this
meeting as it is one of the few general meetings
held during the school year. Ashlie Hatton
(mom of Jackson and Blake) will lead the PTA again
in
After School Activities - Dance
and Cello
Ms. Lisa is offering a Dance Demo
Class for parents and children (ages 3, 4 and 5) on
Tuesday, September 9 from 3:45 to 4:15 here at
school. She will show what happens in the
Creative Dance class. This was a very popular
class for the young children last year. Come
see what it's all about!
Ms. Lisa has started Hip Hop
Class on Wednesday afternoons for first grade and
up, and will start Creative Dance for 3, 4 and 5
year olds next month.
Cello lessons are now offered
on Tuesday afternoons at Beach Park. Grace
Juliano is teaching after school and is open to
students of all ages. For preschool and very
young students, Grace is happy to offer lessons; she
asks that the child's parent attend the lesson to
learn and be able to help reinforce what the child
is learning when at home. Interested?
Give her a call at 813-426-6412 or send an e-mail to
gracejuliano@gmail.com .
School Pictures
The students
enjoyed having their pictures made by the
photographer this week. Proofs should be here
within the next few weeks and they will be
distributed to you. You may select the pose(s)
and picture packages you want. If your child
was absent on Wednesday, make-up pictures will be
taken when the class group photos are made a little
later in the school year.
Ink Cartridge and Cell Phone Recycling
We will be participating again this
year in a recycling program for ink cartridges. In
addition, the program will include cell phone
recycling. A collection box is in the library.
Please collect your used cartridges at home and
work. Thanks to Carrie Tishler, Coblens' mom,
for heading up our recycling effort again this year.
BPS Family Picnic
We're throwing turkey hot dogs on the
grill and inviting everyone to a family picnic on
Thursday, September 18th at Al Lopez Park, just
north of Raymond James Stadium on Himes Avenue.
The school will provide the dogs with condiments and
drinks. Families are asked to bring a dish to
share. If you'd like guidance for what to
bring, here are our suggestions:
Upper Elementary & Middle School -
Desserts
Lower Elementary - Side Dishes or Salads
